HOW TO DRAW A PUMPKIN

Learn how to draw a pumpkin in seven easy steps.

Thanksgiving will be here before we know it, so today I wanted to share a simple pumpkin drawing tutorial. Every year during the months of October and November my house is always decorated with pumpkins. So I thought I would show you how I draw a pumpkin that you can follow along and add to your fall decorations right before the thanksgiving feast.

Here’s how I did it…

HOW TO DRAW A PUMPKIN

STEP 1-GATHER NECESSARY SUPPLIES

I used…

White Construction Paper
Pencil
Pencil Sharpener
Eraser

STEP 2- VISUALIZE AND DRAW AN OVAL

To start I first visualized in my head the size, shape, and placement of the pumpkin on my paper. Then I carefully drew an oval on my paper trying to match what I had visualized. The oval is the basic shape for my pumpkin.

STEP 3- ERASE THE MIDDLE OF THE TOP LINE OF THE OVAL AND MAKE IT CURVE

Just like an apple where the top curves in until it all meets together where the stem comes out I am going to create the same illusion with my pumpkin. To start I erased the middle of the top line of the oval about the size I want my stem to be. Then I redrew the line I erased only this time I had it curve gently down into the oval.

STEP 4- DRAW LINES DOWN THE FRONT OF THE OVAL

To start transforming my oval into a pumpkin I added lines down the front of my oval. I started on the left side of my oval making two curved lines that look like left parentheses and then in the middle I made a straight line. Lastly I finished on the right side of my oval making two curved lines that look like right parentheses for a total of five lines inside my oval. For this step I tried to make sure all my lines are evenly spaced out.

STEP 5- RETRACE THE LINES ON THE PUMPKIN

At this moment my pumpkin looks like a flat basketball. To make my pumpkin look realistic I retraced the lines on my pumpkin. I started with the outside left line. Carefully I traced down that line until I reached the bottom then I curved that line into the bottom of my oval connecting it to the next curved line. This gave my pumpkin a round appearance. I did this step two more times on the left working from the outside line in. When I reached the middle line I stopped and did the same steps starting on the outside right line working my way to the middle. I left the middle straight line untouched.

STEP 6- ERASE THE ORIGINAL LINE ON THE BOTTOM OF THE OVAL

Now I can erase the original line on the bottom of my oval. For this step I tried to erase the line completely so nobody can see the original line in my drawing and I was careful to not accidentally erase the new lines I had just made.

STEP 7- DRAW THE STEM

To draw a stem I started by drawing two curved lines coming out of the top of my pumpkin right on top of where the pumpkin curves in. Then on top of the two curved lines I drew an oval connecting my two lines together to make a stem.
