HOW TO MEND AN OLD WREATH

Learn how to mend an old wreath for Christmas–The perfect decoration to hang around your house.

How To Mend An Old Wreath

Christmas will be here before we know it, so today I wanted to share a simple wreath tutorial that I wanted to mend just in time for the holidays. It’s a wreath that my mom had bought years ago and over the years that she had it hanging the ribbon has faded and the bow has come apart. I thought that mending her old wreath would be a nice Christmas present for my mom.

Here’s how I did it…

HOW TO MEND AN OLD WREATH

STEP 1- GATHER NECESSARY SUPPLIES

I used…

  • Recycled Mom’s Old Wreath
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Glue Sticks for Hot Glue Gun
  • Hot Glue Gun Protection Mat
  • Trash Bag Large

STEP 2- TAKE OFF THE OLD RIBBON

I started by removing the old ribbon on the wreath. The end of the ribbon was originally glued onto the wreath. To take it off I ended up breaking a small piece of the wooden wreath. But that’s fine since I will be covering it up with the new ribbon.

STEP 3- DECIDE HOW YOU WANT TO DECORATE YOUR WREATH

My mom wanted her wreath to look like the old one so we went to Walmart to look for ribbon to replace the old worn out one. My mom decided to buy a wire free shiny red ribbon. Since I am just wrapping the ribbon tightly around the wreath it did not need wire inside to help hold its shape. For your wreath you can choose any ribbon you like.

STEP 4- GATHER AND PREPARE YOUR MATERIALS

Before I started decorating my mom’s wreath I gathered all the supplies on the kitchen table. Then I prepared the materials for my project. First I plugged in the hot glue gun and turned it on to the lowest setting. While the hot glue gun was heating up I prepared the table. I cut a large trash bag along one seam to open it up and use as a tablecloth. Then I used the scissors to cut off the plastic packaging around the ribbon. I did unroll the ribbon a little but I did not take it off the roll. I did this to make it easier to wrap the ribbon around the wreath. When the hot glue gun started to drip glue I was ready to work on my project.

STEP 5- WRAP YOUR WREATH WITH THE NEW RIBBON AND FINISH WITH A BOW

To start my project I first put a dot of glue right where I broke off a piece of the wreath. Then I put the end of the ribbon on top of the glue and held it down with my finger until it dried.

Next I started wrapping the ribbon around the wreath. The ribbon I used was thin so I overlapped it to make it look thicker. While I was working on the wreath I made sure to leave the same amount of space as I was wrapping the ribbon around.

Once I wrapped the ribbon all the way around the wreath I finished the project by measuring exactly how much ribbon I needed to overlap the spot where I started, to make it look seamless. Then I cut off the ribbon from the roll and glued the end down onto the wreath.

To finish the look I used the same ribbon to make a bow and glued it down on top of the wreath.
